Attractions
Attractions are when one exhibits the desire to entice others. One may try to entice others in a plethora of ways, may it be through movie trailers, like the reading Coming Attractions details, seduction, like the reading Self-Seduction describes, or even doing a private act in public, like Emma Bovary’s Cab explains. By creating a scene of enticement or pleasure, others are drawn to it, completing the cycle. The audience is key, for if they did not like the performance, the creators would not be putting on this show. An example of this is in a strip club. The exotic dancer tries to put on a show for the audience in the club, showing them private parts of their body that they would not get to see usually. By revealing this intimate part of themselves, they entice the audience and create an attraction.

Fantasmatic Scenes

In the readings, fantasmatic scenes are depicted as scenes where the individual’s mind succumbs to fantasy, transforming even every day activities. For example, in the reading In the Bedroom of the Countess, the boy’s curiosity and attraction toward the countess leads to pleasure even during the pain of the whipping. In many other aspects of life today, fantasmatic scenes blind individuals, creating a fantasy world for them to experience. One example that comes to mind is celebrity impersonators. Their whole goal is to live within this fantasy world of the celebrity, performing for the other. They go to great lengths, spending hundreds of dollars and hours of their time to be someone else, to find out who they really are. Many individuals make careers out of being impersonators.

Intensities

Intensities are auras or “vibes,” if you will, that permeate the environment of an individual or group of individuals. They are not specifically feelings, but more like vague ambiences that individuals feel and react to when present. For example, in the reading Nakedness, the act of being naked does not solely lie with the person who is unclothed, instead it permeates through all individuals, and nakedness leads to the aura of openness in this case. An example that comes to mind is when friends sing along to the lyrics of a song in the car. Usually a person does not proclaim or ask the other individuals to sing along, but when someone starts singing, a feeling overcomes the others. Soon enough, the whole car is singing along. You can feel the energy between the individuals, and this energy is what I believe intensities are.

Impersonations

Impersonations are when an individual tries to impersonate a persona in order to impress the other. They use actions and behavior in order to do this. In the reading Bodybuilding as Drag, gay individuals create a persona of a hypermasculine version of themselves in order for others to see this hyper-sexualized version of themselves. One example that comes to mind is actors. T.R. Knight, a star of Grey’s Anatomy, is a gay man, but he played a straight man on the television show. He put sexuality and intimacy on the line in order to inhabit this role, a hard thing to do for many. Even further, he was told not to come out, so he had to create this persona of being heterosexual in order for the audience and producers to be happy. In this way, he inhabited this impersonation.
